Castle Cary Town Council have received the following update from Somerset Council on the planned works on Station Road.
“I am writing to provide an update on the outstanding safety defect on Station Road, Castle Cary, which is currently under temporary traffic signal control.
We recognise that this issue has generated considerable interest within the local community, particularly given the length of time it has remained unresolved. The site presents a few technical challenges, and we appreciate your patience while we work to deliver a permanent solution.
Over the next six to eight weeks, you will notice increased activity on site. As an initial step, an additional survey is required to confirm ground conditions. This will inform the design of the temporary works. A further survey will locate the position and depth of apparatus within the carriageway. These surveys will be undertaken before the end of March, using the existing traffic management arrangements.
The main works are scheduled to commence on 20 April. This allows time for the survey results to be reviewed, assessed against the existing design, and for any necessary amendments to be made. It also enables mobilisation of the workforce, procurement of materials, and completion of required administrative processes and permissions.
The works are expected to take approximately 10 weeks to complete. During this period, the road will need to remain closed 24 hours a day.
Due to the nature of the works, it is unlikely that pedestrian or vehicular access can be safely maintained. As there is no suitable alternative pedestrian route, a temporary structure will be installed to allow safe passage past the works area.
As indicated previously, the site involves more complexity than simply reinstating a defect. The drainage system requires full replacement, and as part of these works, we will also be increasing the pipe diameter to improve outflow and enhance future resilience. The culvert to be replaced is 20 metres in length, over 2 metres deep, and located beneath the sewer. Additional apparatus within the carriageway will also need to be supported throughout the works.
Further information will be provided in advance of the works commencing. We are aware that the intention had previously been to begin the scheme this financial year; however, despite best efforts, this has not been possible.”
