Heart of Wessex Line Closure

Upcoming engineering work – Castle Cary to Weymouth from Monday 23 to Sunday 29 September.

Please be aware that from Monday 23 to Sunday 29 September, rail replacement buses will be running between Castle Cary and Weymouth while Network Rail invest £1.5 million into the Heart of Wessex Line.

Full details of the closure can be found below:

• Monday 23 to Sunday 29 September – Buses will run between Castle Cary and Weymouth

Teams will be replacing nearly a mile of track between Thornford and Yeovil Pen Mill, in addition to installing 3600 tonnes of new ballast stone and 75 composite sleepers to provide the new track with better support and stability.

The extended line closure means teams can make improvements to the railway junctions either side of Maiden Newton station, replacing 63 sleepers and two sets of switches and crossings (moveable sections of track that guide trains from one track to another). Additional work this closure will see teams inspect tunnels, clear litter and test signalling and communications equipment along the line.

Before the closure begins, on Sunday 22 September buses will run between Yeovil Pen Mill and Weymouth and Wareham and Weymouth.

Our work over the last four years has been a serious investment to improve the reliability of the Heart of Wessex line. Since February 2020, we’ve been renewing key stretches of track, replacing bridges and carrying out essential maintenance at our stations.

Over the past month a marketing campaign has been underway, with posters in stations, digital display information and updates on social media. It would be greatly appreciated if you were to share this information to make the public more aware.

If you have any questions about this scheme or require assistance in the future, please do not hesitate to get in contact – via email SouthernRegionStakeholders@networkrail.co.uk
